Science

‘A high quality Science education provides the foundations for conceptual understanding of the World. Through building up a body of key knowledge and precise vocabulary, pupils should be encouraged to recognise the power of rational explanation and develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena’

Our Science curriculum is planned following the Hampshire Science Model Learning Journeys. These units of work progress through the years looking at different scientific concepts, whilst developing scientific enquiry- based skills alongside. This enables pupils to build on their knowledge and recall prior learning of skills and concepts to help them deepen their thinking and understanding of Science.

At Berrywood we aim to provide a high-quality Science curriculum which develops pupils’ passion and natural curiosity for the World around them. We strive to develop pupils’ scientific knowledge, skills and understanding through purposeful, engaging enquiries and first-hand experiences which both challenge and fascinate pupils. Thus, inspiring them to deepen their thinking and recognise the impact humans can have in Science and future advancements in our modern world. Pupils will learn to explore scientific research that will help them to formulate their own ideas and opinions as well as respect and challenge those of others. We aim to promote and inspire future skilled scientists from Early Year to Year 6, ensuring the wide variety of opportunities and investigations are carried out safely and accessible for all.

Our Curriculum intends to:

●        develop pupils understanding of substantive and disciplinary knowledge through well planned lessons

●        encourage high quality pupil questioning that provokes deep critical thinking and understanding of scientific hypotheses and theories

●        Provide opportunities for pupils to communicate their views and those of others in a clear and concise way using scientific language to support their thinking.

●        Support pupils in developing the scientific skills to gather and record data effectively enabling them to draw conclusions based on the evidence they have collated.

●        build on and deepen their substantive knowledge in Science enabling them to become ambitious independent thinkers and learners

●        Enabling pupils to make links in their learning, understanding how Science is integral to other aspects of the curriculum and everyday life.
